Online Encyclopedias and Dictionaries
One of the great things about the Internet is how millions of contributors can help ensure information about a huge number of subjects remains current and up-to-date and in sharp contrast to the days when purchase of an encyclopedia or dictionary reflected the extent of knowledge or common parlance on the day the pages were printed on paper. The rapid rate of technological advance and the changing nature of language has never been greater. Inventions created within the last few years have made several static encyclopedia entries redundant while words like 'gay' formerly meaning a person of optimistic or happy disposition, is now typically applied in a far different way. Online encyclopedias and dictionaries now contribute significantly to the literature and knowledge standards of our time; are convenient to use and save massively on the costs of printing and paper production.

Encyclopedias

There's a qualitive difference between online offerings and Wikipedia, despite being free in every way, typcally delivers accurate results. Encarta, by contrast, seems dated and still refers to Cuper as the administrative capital of Fife. Britannica offers move audio-visual offerings but at a price.

Dictionaries

Language is always in a constant state of flux and change with each and every passing year with regular printed editions of dictionaries rapidly becoming outdated. Online alternatives offer a better way to keep up to date. On test, 'blatherskite' an old Scottish word was faithfully delivered with accurate meaning on all three offerings below.
