Photo Notes

Eilean Donan may actually be the most famous castle in Scottish History since it appeared in blockbuster films like 'Braveheart' and photographs on many calendars. The most interesting part, from a personal opinion, was how the painting in the great hall points one foot towards the observer irrespective of one's position in the room. Spooky huh?

By 1995, there was a serious shortage of 'television software' as defined by the late Chas Miller and a desire to introduce new and different kinds of programs in preference to repeats and American imports. One of the more successful series was called 'Hamish Macbeth' with the lead character played by Robert Carlyle and based on the novels of Marion Chesney (aka M. C. Beaton). In this series, the lead character was an often lazy policeman assigned to life and duty in the fictional tiny village of Lochdubh (Black Lake) and as part of the Strathbane constabulary who don't always appreciate his presence. In the course of his adventures, the viewers meet oddball characters like TV John and history is rewritten. Overall, it's a great televisual feast and precedes 'Monacrch of the Glen' with a style and execution bringing tears and laughter in fair measure. It was largely filmed in Plockton and the impression is that of a small hamlet while, in reality, Plockton is a much bigger place than one might imagine from the television series. Getting there means passing along some narrow roads with Highland Cattle, sheep and lambs so driving with care is advised.

The Isle of Skye is a place of extreme contrast with huge differences between north and south. The Clan Donald centre in the southern part of he island is sourrounded by luscious gardens while Dunvegan Castle of the Mcleod Clan and the surrounding region in the north struggles to create similar colour and species. There are no garden centres in the north region nor need for one. The land is harsh and unforgiving and yet, within these fernlands and bogs, there lies a heritage museum located close to where the grave of Flora McDonald, the lady who helped 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' escape after the disaster at the battlefield of Culloden. It's a remote location yet well worth a visit since it illustrates so much about island life past and present.
